Genetically Engineered Salmon
I am not an advocated of GMO foods. I really don’t think they are safe and healthy. Regardless of how I feel, GMO foods are here and they are not going anywhere any time soon. To prove this point, The FDA has just approved a genetically engineered salmon that will becoming to a store near you. Some people are calling this new salmon “Frankenfish”.
This salmon should be coming to a store in a couple of years. The FDA states the fish will be safe. Also, this fish will grow much faster. This new Salmon will be called AquAdvantage Salmon. The FDA states the nutritional profile of this new Salmon will be no difference than the traditional farm-raised Atlantic salmon. This fish is suppose to grow twice as fast as normal salmon. This will allow more of the salmon to be in the market, and the salmon will reach the market faster.
A company called AquaBounty will be the creator of this new salmon. They are located in Massachusetts. They say the new fish will be very nutritional and healthy for consumers. However, some people disagree.
They sad thing about this entire situation is that the stores will not be required to tell the consumer the new salmon is genetically engineered. The FDA states the law does require the new fish to be labeled. This is because there is not supposed to be a difference between this salmon and existing salmon. This genetically engineered salmon has the same color, odor, texture as well as flavor as the traditional salmon.
I think, I will be saying no to the new AquAdvantage Salmon. Also, their are retailers saying they will not sell this fish. Some of them are Trader, Whole Foods, Target and Kroger. All I can say is the new “Frankenfish” want be on my dinner table.
