Arthritis is a disease that affects the joints. It is used to describe
rheumatic diseases. There are over 100 different types of arthritis. When you
are suffering from arthritis you will experience joint pains, swelling, aching
and stiffness. You can develop these symptoms over a period of time or the can
just occur suddenly. Lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis are two popular forms of
arthritis. These two diseases can cause pain through your entire body. Also,
they can affect more than one organ. Two of the most common types are
osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Although arthritis mostly effect the elderly, people of all ages can be
affected by this disease. There are 52 million adults in America that suffer
from some form of arthritis such as fibomyalgia, lupus, gout or rheumatoid.
There are 52.5 million adults in the US, equating to 22.7% of the population, reported to have a form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus or fibromyalgia. According to the CDC, 60% of people with arthritis are women, and most forms of arthritis are more common in women, with the exception of gout, which is more common in men. An estimated 294,000 children under the age of 18 have some form of arthritis or rheumatic condition; this represents approximately 1 in every 250 children in the US.4
What Causes Arthritis
Cartilage is a firm but flexible connective tissue in your joints. It protects the joints by absorbing the pressure and shock created when you move and put stress on them. A reduction in the normal amount of this cartilage tissue cause some forms of arthritis.
Normal wear and tear causes osteoarthritis (OA), one of the most common forms of arthritis. An infection or injury to the joints can exacerbate this natural breakdown of cartilage tissue. Your risk of developing OA may be higher if you have a family history of the disease.
Another common form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is an autoimmune disorder. It occurs when your body’s immune system attacks the tissues of the body. These attacks affect the synovium, a soft tissue in your joints that produces a fluid that nourishes the cartilage and lubricates the joints.
