What is a bruise? a bruise is an injury that is caused by a bump, hit or blow that does not cut the skin.  However, a bruise form because the injury does break the blood vessels underneath the skin.  When this happens, blood seeps out of the vessels. This is what produces that black and blue discoloration when you get a bruise along with the soreness and swelling.

Most of the time, the bruise will start off red. Then it will become black-blue and ultimately it becomes yellowish-green.  It becomes yellow-green because the body is working to remove dead cells and tissues. There is new and healthy tissue being built. When the body replaces the damage cells with new cells, the skin color is restored. Some injuries that may cause bruises are pinches, sprains, falling, punches and suctions.  A lot of people that are over weight, obese or anemic bruise easy.

Foods To Eat To Reduce Bruising:  Vegetables, Fish, Lean Meats, Nuts, Foods High In Vitamin  C and K

Foods To Avoid: Sugary Foods, Foods Especially Meat High In Fat, And Process Foods

How To Treat A Bruises

Reduce Bruising and Swelling

  1. Ice the area on and off for the first 24-48 hours.
    2. Apply ice for about 15 minutes at a time, and always put something like a towel or  wash cloth between the ice and your skin.
    3. Rest the affected area.
    4. If possible, elevate the affected area.

Treating The Pain And Symptoms: For pain, take acetaminophen (Tylenol), or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Alleve).
When You Should Contact The Doctor Because You Have A Bruise

  1. If you have extreme pain
  2. Swelling or Redness
  3. You can’t move a joint
  4. Bone is broken
  5. Bruise on your head or face
  6. Bruise show up for no reason
  7. Bruises show up while taking blood thinning medication

Additional Information On Treating A Bruises
1. Two days after a bruise develops, apply a heat pack or wash cloth soaked in warm water to the area several times a day to promote healing.
2. Pain and tenderness should get better within a few days and the bruise should go away within a couple of weeks.
